For the foreseeable future, the Nurburgring and Hockenheim have agreed to alternate as host of the German race, and in 2012 the privilege falls to the latter. Our main base is historic Heidelberg, just ten miles from the circuit. This beautiful university town is full of bars, cafes, restaurants and traditional inns which are the focus of evening entertainment. The view from the Old Bridge to the magnificent castle, high above the River Neckar, is surely one of Europe's most memorable. Click here for a pictorial tour.
At Hockenheim in 2000, Barrichello's qualifying session was ruined by electrical problems, so when he took up his 18th place on the grid he had no thoughts of ending his career sequence of 123 GP's without a win. Up ahead, Schumacher and Fisichella eliminated each other at the first corner and Rubens was soon scything through the field until, by lap 15, only the McLarens were in front. Just after half distance a ghostly figure was seen wandering across the 200mph back straight initiating a full course yellow. Barrichello and Hakkinen had stopped the previous time around but the luckless DC had to queue behind the safety car to reach the pits. When rain fell on lap 35 Mika dived in for wets. The Brazilian stayed out and expertly maintained a fast enough pace in the mixed conditions to take an emotion-charged first victory. |

It is already a decade since the Hockenheimring was reduced to a more sensible length allowing the cars to be seen more often as they lap with greater regularity. The bulk of the crowd is still accommodated in the Motodrom, a huge stadium-like arrangement of concrete grandstands, capable of absorbing 100,000 fans. But a whole new range of exciting viewing has been opened up making the circuit more rewarding for the spectator. The atmosphere here is always electric and organisation is as good as it gets. Tickets are valid for all three days of the meeting. All seats (grandstands 1-8) are numbered and in 2010 gave a view of a TV screen. Seats are covered where indicated opposite. A limited number of "Sunday Only" seats may be available at a reduction of £20.
