Monza's Autodromo Nazionale is one of the great theatres of motorsport. General Admission is a trifle hectic on race day but the grandstands are excellent. As usual we have adopted the lakeside resort of Como, just 25 miles from the circuit, as our base. Built amidst the mountains at the southern-most tip of the lake to which it gives its name, Como is just 25 miles from the circuit. The natural beauty of the lake is Como's main attraction, but the historic Old Town, the stylish shopping streets and the spectacular funicular railway are all sure to delight.
At the start of the 1996 Italian GP, Alesi leap-frogged from sixth to first as the title chasing Williams pair diced for an early advantage. Hill, stung by his team's apparent treachery, was determined to prove his worth and dismissed Alesi with great courage and audacity. Today, victory alone was not enough for Damon and, in an attempt to annihilate the opposition, he clipped a tyre wall and spun into retirement. Fortunately, Villeneuve fell foul of the same obstacle and the Englishman's 13 point lead remained intact while Schumacher went on to deliver a long awaited victory on Ferrari's most sacred ground.
